ICARDA invites applications from experienced professionals for the position of Water Harvesting/Resources Engineer. The position will contribute to ICARDA�s efforts in this area and report to the Director of ICARDA�s Integrated Water and Land Management Program (IWLMP).

ICARDA is an international autonomous, non-profit, research center supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). ICARDA�s mission is to contribute to the improvement of livelihoods of the resource-poor in dry areas by enhancing food security and alleviating poverty through agricultural research and partnerships to achieve sustainable increases in agricultural productivity and income, while ensuring the efficient and more equitable use and conservation of natural resources. ICARDA has its headquarters in Aleppo, Syria and has several regional programs and country offices. ICARDA has a global mandate, and works through partnerships with a network of global, regional and national organizations.

Main Responsibilities:

ICARDA conducts research and capacity building to sustainably improve the productivity of rainwater, and surface and groundwater resources in agriculture. The appointee will work with ICARDA scientists from other disciplines, with national program partners, and with advanced research institutes, to assess water resources, and to plan, design and implement research and training programs for the development of water resources and water harvesting systems and associated structures. He/she will also identify the main technical, social and policy constraints to improving the integration of soil and water harvesting practices in agricultural systems in general, and in drier rangeland environments in particular. He/she will develop linkages to current research and development work in ICARDA�s research projects to promulgate principles of efficient water and land management; and initiate appropriate training activities in rainwater harvesting and associated water management practices.

Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate will have an MSc with five years experience, or a BSc with 10 years experience, in water resources, agricultural or civil engineering. He/she will have demonstrated competence in understanding, analyzing, designing and implementing rainwater harvesting systems and structures for agriculture and other purposes at the macro and micro levels. He/she must have at least three years extensive field research experience in the application of water harvesting and conservation practices for rangeland rehabilitation, supplemental irrigation and other agricultural and environmental uses, part of which should have been in developing countries; capability and willingness to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary and multinational context; computer skills; and fluency in spoken and written English. Capability in French and/or Arabic, and GIS and remote sensing capabilities would be an advantage.

Terms of Appointment

The appointment will be for an initial period of three years, renewable thereafter on an annual basis. The salary is paid in US dollars. Benefits include housing allowance, paid home leave travel, a savings scheme, life and health insurance package, vehicle for business and personal use, and free enrollment for dependent children in the ICARDA administered International School (KG-Grade 12).

ICARDA invites applications from experienced professionals for the position of a project manager for the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR)-funded project addressing salinity management in Iraq. The position is located in Aleppo, Syria and will report to the ACIAR Focal Point for the Project and to ICARDA�s Assistant Director General (International Cooperation and Communication) of ICARDA, located in the ICARDA headquarters.

Main Responsibilities:

The core responsibility of the Project Manager is the management and administration of the research and capacity development activities, and coordination of project implementation with the relevant Iraqi institutions and international organizations, including ACIAR, Australian institutions, International Water Management Institute (IWMI), and International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA). She/he will be responsible for the overall management of the project and ensure timely and quality implementation of its activities. Major tasks including the following:

� To manage the ACIAR-Iraq Salinity Project in consultation with ACIAR and ICARDA Focal Points for the project

� To work very closely with the scientists and staff of the partner institutions in planning, implementing, and monitoring the project-led activities for quality outputs.

� To work effectively with policy makers in Iraq and donors community to facilitate the funding for research and development activities on salinity beyond the project duration

� To coordinate to and monitor day to day project activities, including administrative and financial matters.

� To make necessary arrangements in consultation with project partners for training activities, workshops, and meetings.

� To write technical and annual reports on the progress of the project work in consultation with the scientists of the partner institutions.

� To organize annual Technical and Steering Committee Meetings of the project.

The position requires substantial experience in implementing multi-disciplinary projects, capacity to facilitate and catalyze inter- and intra-institutional cooperation, and fluency in English and Arabic.

Qualifications and Experience

� PhD degree in an agricultural field with biophysical background in soil and water salinity management.

� Minimum 10 to 15 years experience in research/development project management, including administrative and financial matters, and preferably in an international, multidisciplinary and multi-cultural setting.

� Track record of successfully leading and implementing research and/or development projects.

� Good understanding of the operational mechanisms and networks in the Iraqi government ministries dealing with agriculture, water, environment, and science and technology).

� Excellent skills in written and spoken English and Arabic.

� High level interpersonal and communications skills, coupled with proven ability in planning, organizing, consensus-building, negotiation and networking, coupled with credibility and networks in the aid and development organizations such as the World Bank, USAID, FAO, etc.

Terms of Appointment

The appointment will be for an initial period of two years, the first of which will be considered probationary. The salary is paid in US dollars. Benefits include housing allowance, paid home leave travel, a pension scheme, life and health insurance package, vehicle for business and personal use, and support for dependents� education according to ICARDA Policy.

Background

Within 4C Association coffee farmers, trade and industry and civil society from around the world work together for more sustainability in the entire coffee sector. This global community has joined forces to continuously improve the social, environmental and economic conditions for the people making their living from coffee.� Main pillars of the in 2006 established Association are a code of conduct, rules of participation for trade and industry, support mechanisms for coffee farmers, a verification system and the participatory governance structure. 4C Association is managed by a secretariat of a dozen persons. The head office is located in Bonn, Germany, with regional offices in coffee producer regions.

We are looking for a motivated and dynamic Regional Coordinator (f/m) for the regional 4C Office East Africa in Kampala, Uganda in order to ensure adequate support for 4C Members, intensification of partnerships with public and private organizations and visibility in the region.

Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Director Support Services, the Regional Coordinator East Africa is mainly in charge of coordination and implementation of 4C Activities (especially information and support activities), communication and further development of partnerships and projects in close cooperation with partner organizations and 4C Members of the 4C Association in Eastern / Southern Africa. Additionally, the Regional Coordinator East Africa contributes to the further development and delivery of Support Services in the region.� He / she works in close collaboration with the Support Service Department, the Verification Manager and the Communication Department at 4C Office Bonn.

Tasks include

� Represent and promote 4C Association at coffee meetings, conferences and similar events in Africa, esp. Eastern / Southern Africa and disseminate knowledge about 4C Association and its activities

� Maintain and further intensify co-operations with partner organizations, donors, governments, Civil Society groups, research organizations and other standard initiatives in East Africa

� Provide input to the design of local outreach strategies and cooperation, and coordinate implementation of activities and projects in collaboration with 4C Office Bonn, EAFCA and further partners

� Enhance communication and information flow within 4C Association (Secretariat, 4C Members, future 4C Forums and working groups) and outside 4C Association (private and public actors in the coffee sectors, partners, interested public) in East Africa

� Provide guidance regarding 4C Application, preparation for verification and continuous improvement to 4C Members and 4C Units in the region and feed back learnings and challenges

� Coordinate and support organization of meetings, trainings, events in close collaboration with EAFCA, 4C Members, coffee institutions and supporting organizations in Eastern / Southern Africa

� Prepare reports on 4C Activities and regular budget updates for 4C Office East Africa

Job qualifications : Profile & Qualifications

- Master\'s Degree in agronomy, socio-economics, or related field;

- 5 years of working experience, preferably in the coffee sector;

- Working experiences in project management and financial management;

- Practical experiences especially in design and coordination of activities and projects related to the agricultural sector;

- Experiences in active collaboration with different public and private stakeholders;

- Knowledge of standard initiatives and verification/certification systems;

- Excellent written and verbal communications skills in English as well as local language(s);

- Ability to work independently and in a team towards defined objectives and goals;

- Results-oriented approach, positive thinking and good teamwork spirit;

- Willingness and ability to travel, including in rural areas;
